OCD & Neurofeedback

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be very debilitating. It is characterised by obsessive thoughts and irrational fears that lead to compulsive and ritualistic behaviours. Those behaviours serve the purpose of either suppressing or alleviating the obsessive thoughts.

Individuals suffering from OCD generally know their thinking patterns are irrational and are very distressed by them. Worse yet, they understand that their ritualistic behaviours are non-sensical and impair their daily activities. Some individuals may engage in ritualistic behaviours for hours, leading to great psychological distress and interference in their personal as well as in their professional lives.

The frontal lobes are responsible for our reasoning and thinking. People who suffer from OCD usually experience disturbances in this area of the brain. Neurofeedback can help by bringing electrical activity in those parts of the brain to a level of productive functioning. Three electrodes will be gently placed on the individual’s scalp to read the electrical activity. This information will be sent back to the brain for processing through a monitor. Based on what is seen on the screen the brain will make the necessary adjustments on its own.
