ADHD & Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback and ADD/ADHD

Parents always come to my office concerned about their child’s behaviors at school and at home. Most of the time they are seeking help to assist their child who is having problems in sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, doesn’t listen when spoken to directly, often has difficulty in following through on instructions and fails to finish work.

When the behavior starts putting the child in trouble at school, like when she is always sent to the principal’s office for “talking back to the teacher”, “fighting with a friend”, “acting impulsively”, the parents doubt of their parenting skills.

ADHD is related to the low arousal of the brain, which means that the brain waves are not regulated the way normal brain waves would be. Those who suffer from ADHD get easily discouraged, bored, irritable, and depressed. This also can lead to risk-taking behaviors and alcohol and drug use. It affects self-esteem, and leads to a diverse range of mental illnesses when not appropriately treated.

Neurofeedback has been known as a non invasive treatment with successful results. It helps the brain to regulate itself in a way that the person treated is able to concentrate, focus on the task and finish what he or she started. When Neurofeedback is used to treat children and adults with ADD and ADHD there are chances that the need for medication may decrease (in some cases there may not be a need for medication after Neurofeedback)
